Obviously this verse speaks prophetically and in reference to Jesus the coming servant and savior. Pastors are also called and commissioned by Jesus. As Area Leaders, we recognize their calling, commissioning and ministry. Therefore our heart is to listen to the under-shepherds. We see ourselves building relationships with Pastors and hearing what they have to say. We’re praying that we can become safe sounding boards, confidants.
We’re told that most men don’t have one close friend. As friends we want to become good listeners in regards to the good, bad and ugly of Pastoral ministry. It’s simply life and part of the landscape.
To uphold the weak is to take tender care of those who are weak. Pastors and leaders are not exempt from becoming fainthearted or going through seasons of weakness. Caring for others can be exhausting and depleting and we can find ourselves becoming weary in doing good.
As Area Leaders we want to be sensitive to discern and recognize what season of ministry Pastors are in. Pastors generally need support. Especially, if they’re going through a season of weakness. If they are, we want to do what we can to take tender care of them, to uphold them. What that support looks like may be unique to each pastor and circumstance.
Of course there are also practical needs that arise. We aim at identifying these needs and personally helping and supporting as needed. We’ll also look to the area Vineyard family to meet needs when opportunities surface. We’re all on the same team! So we want to foster a spirit of families helping and supporting families.
“But the Israelites encouraged each other and took
their positions again at the same place they had fought the previous day.”
-Judges 20:22 NLT
Pastoral ministry has it ups and downs. Some days we’re more encouraged than others. We celebrate the victories! But, like the Israelites, some days we can experience, casualties, setbacks, disappointments and discouragement can set in.
Encouragement is refreshing in any season but particularly when we’re facing discouragement. We aim at encouraging Pastors and leaders to stay on track, take up their positions again and keep up the good fight of faith!
How will we do this? Through a good word! “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.” -Proverbs 12:25 NKJT
Other ways that we can encourage each other is through a phone call, a text, a note or email. Little words of affirmation can go a long way! An invitation to pull up a couple of chairs is always helpful too.

It is our honor to serve the Vineyard churches from Salinas to Santa Barbara.
